Students from E=mc² class learned that the ‘Saturn V’ was a rocket NASA built to send people to the moon. (The V in the name is the Roman numeral five).
It was the most powerful rocket that had ever flown successfully and was used in the Apollo program in the 1960s and 1970s. It also was used to launch the Skylab space station.
The students then worked together to create a scale drawing of The Saturn V rocket using its actual measurements in feet.
They converted these measurements into centimetres (1 foot = 30.48cm), and then scaled their results down by 1:100 to produce a scaled drawing.
They then began making cylinders and cones using the exact scaled-down measurements to produce a 3D model of the Saturn V rocket.
The project was part of this term’s Artsmark theme ‘Leicester and Beyond’ that includes students exploring space across the curriculum to celebrate the 40 rocket sculptures shown in Leicester for Rocket Round Leicester.
